s fabulously simple yet effective idea from Marianne Kirby proves that putting buttons on almost anything will dramatically improve its looks. At least, this certainly turned out to be true in the case of an old table she picked up for $5 at a yard sale. Marianne told us how she did it:

"One Saturday afternoon, at a yard sale, I had one of those moments. One of those moments when the heavens parted and a ray of sunshine fell on an item I just couldn't leave behind. Sometimes this happens to me at yard sales. This particular ray fell on a small side table, about knee-high, with angled legs and a slightly recessed top. After some smart bargaining, the table went home with me for the low, low price of $5.

My next step was to start combing ebay for buttons. Buttons can be purchased in bulk lots for between five and twenty dollars, plus shipping. I ordered two bulk batches for a total of 1600+ buttons in a green and white mix. Always order more than you think you'll need for a project like this. The table I was working with had about 2 sq feet of surface area and I had around 100 buttons when I finished.

When you've picked a color scheme for your buttons, and you are waiting on them to arrive, take the time to sand and paint your table. I used a white semi-gloss spray paint and applied three thin coats. Thin coats are always better!

Once the paint is dry and your buttons are in hand, it's time to start applying the buttons. I used a basic tacky craft glue to affix my buttons. Spread a thin layer of glue on your surface and start applying your buttons. Nestle them up close to each other, but don't go too crazy. It's easy to get a bit obsessive with this sort of project but the random spacing is part of the charm of the finished object. Make sure your buttons, if you are using a table with a recessed top, do not rise above the top of the lip that goes around the edge of the table. Snip the shanks off of any buttons that do not have flat backs.

It makes life a lot easier if you start at the corners and work your way in to the middle. Cover small areas at a time and take breaks if you start to feel a little crazy.

When you have covered the surface of your table with buttons, allow the glue to dry at least overnight. The glue must be totally dry before you move on to pouring your resin.

Resin can be a little tricky to track down locally. Try your major craft stores and home improvement stores. You are looking for casting resin, not fiberglass resin. I use a brand called Envirotex because it is super easy to mix and use.

You're going to need resin, catalyst (sold as part of the Envirotex kit), two containers, and a mixing stick. Add you resin and catalyst in equal parts (or according to the directions that came with your kit) to one of the containers and mix vigorously, as if you were mixing cake batter. Because it is essential for the resin and catalyst to thoroughly mix, pour the mixture of resin and catalyst from one container into the other. Use your mixing stick to continue vigorous stirring. After about a minute, you should be ready to pour.

Ideally, you will pour your resin in thin layers (just like with spray paint, thin layers are better with resin, too). Don't pour layers that are more than 1/8 of an inch thick - you'll wind up with improperly cured resin and a lot more air bubbles.

Make sure, as you pour the first layer, that you use your mixing stick to spread the resin out like cake frosting - just don't lick the spoon. Air bubbles will begin to rise to the surface. As they reach the surface, blow on them. The carbon dioxide in your breath will help release the bubbles. Just be careful not to inhale the fumes.

Allow your resin to set for a few hours. The setting time depends on temperature and humidity. Hot, dry climates will need less time than cool, damp ones. It isn't fair, but it is true. When your first layer has set, pour a second layer. Continue this process of pouring layers and allowing them to set until your resin is at the level you desire.

Once you have all of your resin poured, allow the table top to cure for 72 hours. When you're done waiting - which is the most difficult part of this project - you will have a beautiful and level table top encasing a colorful array of buttons. A one of a kind side table is all yours! Now put it to good use.

I consider this to be the true sparkleball. If you're going to make only one, this is the one. It's a bit more work to thread 140 or 150 lights but the results are spectacular. No photo really captures it, but Cheri's video of one comes close.

you will need:

112 50 clear plastic cups - 9 oz size with slanted sides

dancing-sparkle ball instructions are the same as for the basic sparkleball with a few exceptions.
If you use the easy printable instructions make sure you add notes for the dancing sparkleball.	1	Poke a hole (approx 1/2 in) through the bottom of all 50 cups. Divide cups into two groups of 25. Each group makes half a ball.
	2	Arrange 12 cups in a circle. Working from the inside of the cups, press the iron near the bottom of the cup, through to the next cup. (see small photo) Hold cups so the melted hole cools and forms a bond.
	3	The next layer has 9 cups. Build this ring on top of the first, one cup at a time. Join each cup to at least two neighbors-- working from the inside and close to the bottom. There may be small gaps between some of the cups in the second ring.
	4	*Fit the last 4 cups into the space left. Once they're all in place, then join them.* Attach each cup to as many others as it touches.**
	5	At this point, I reinforce the half by melting a notch wherever cup rims touch. (This is optional. )
	6	TEST THE LIGHTS BEFORE YOU THREAD THEM. To thread lights: start at the prong end. Start at the outside ring. Insert the 3 lights closest to the prong into the first cup. (The plug and function controller will then hang out when you put the two halves together.) Put 2 or 3 lights in each cup (depending on your total number of lights). Work your way around the ball half, zigzaging from outer cups to inner cups and back. You want to end up on the outer rim, at the cup next to one you started with. Work slowly, careful not to skip a cup or miss a light. If you crack a cup, that's ok.
	7	Set aside the completed half. Build the second half just like you did the first. (Steps 1 - 5)
	8	On the second half, insert lights working from the opposite end (the beginning end. Start with any cup but make sure you finish at the outer rim. The last lights will be the hardest to insert as you juggle the two halves.
	9	Press the two halves together, making them fit nicely. When you join them-- be careful not to burn the lights or wire. Go over the sparkleball, making sure each cup is joined to at least two other cups.
	10	Make a hanger for the sparkleball. I use a bit of chain and two "s" hooks. But you can also use clear fishing line or wire. Attach the hanger through a hole that goes between two cups and forms a solid bond.
	11	Plug in and . . .

o to start things off. my veggietales hoodie. not really a flattering color or print but it's super warm because i lined the entire hoodie, sleeves and all, with flannel.

now onto the tutorial. please read this carefully before asking too many questions. I'll try to be as clear as possible. I directed this tutorial towards someone who has sewn a piece of clothing before. Not going into detail about how to attach sleeves and such but it should be quite simple to figure out.

Materials: 2+ yards of main fabric, .5 yard lining (for hood), 20" or longer separating zipper, .5 yard rib knit fabric, 1 tshirt, it would also be useful to have a hoodie next to you while you're doing this just to make sure things look right.

Instructions:

1. Place the tshirt on top of the fabric. fold the sleeves in and cut out the shape adding about .75" on both sides.

2. Take the piece you just cut out and fold it in half. Lay it over the fabric and cut it out adding 1" - 1.5" to the straight edge. Repeat.

3. Now fold the fabric and along the fold lay the tshirt sleeve down. Adding about .5" to the bottom cut the shape out at whatever length you desire. Repeat.

4. Now you should have 5 pieces. 1 back. 2 front. 2 sleeves. If you don't have this reread steps 1-3.

5. Now we start to sew. Take the back piece and sew the front pieces to it. You should be sewing down the side and along the shoulders. If you were to put this on now it'd be like an ugly vest.

6. Now cut out pockets. Your choice of the size and shape but mine look like this. I take some of the rib knit fabric and cover the edge.

7. Now take your main piece and fold that extra fabric in.

8. Once you've decided where the fold will be unfold and pin the pocket in place. Part of the pocket should overlap the fold. Sew it down.

9. Now that you've sewn it down fold it over again and pin the folds in place.

10. Now sew the bottom band on. The band should be slightly shorter than the whole bottom so you can stretch it a little as you sew. That will give the bottom a slightly snugger fit.

11. Now pin the zipper on under the folds and try it on to make sure the zipper isn't lumpy. Then sew it down. (If you have extra fabric at the neck fold it down like a v-neck)

12. Now onto the sleeves! If you don't have something relatively close to what was shown in the previous picture you might want to reread some steps before moving on. So take your sleeves and sew them so they look like sleeves. (hopefully it's self explanatory)

13. Once you've sewn up the sleeves you can sew them to the main piece. Make sure everything is going in the right direction before sewing. Multiple times I've ended up w/ inside out sleeves.

14. Now sew some cuffs. Then sew them onto the bottom of the sleeve. Didn't really show this but hopefully you can figure it out..

15. Okay we're almost done! Now we move onto the hood. READ THIS PART CAREFULLY I CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING. Look at the previous picture. See that line I drew around the neck.. Measure that. Divide that number in half. That number is the length of the bottom part of the hood. (bottom straight edge in the picture below) The shape of the hood is your choice. Now cut 2 of those out in your main fabric and 2 of those out in the lining. [i forgot to take pictures of the pieces]. Now with the right sides facing each other sew along the green line on the main fabric and the lining. You should have 2 seperate hoods now (one hood is main fabric, one is lining).

16. Now with the right sides of the hoods facing each other, sew along the green line.

17. Turn it right side out and you have your hood. This is the time to add a drawstring thingy if you want. That would be done by poking holes at the bottom and sticking a shoelace/ribbon through.

18. Now sew the hood to the main piece. If you want you can cover this seam because it will be the most visible when you are wearing it.

19. YOU'RE DONE. Admire your work! or if you aren't happy with what you made.. salvage the zipper, scrap the rest and start over!!

I hope this tutorial made sense and that some of you will make use of it. If you do be sure to post pictures.

Stick a pin through a gummy bear.

Dip it in to your varnish/resin. Only dip it for a couple of seconds or it will expand and not look like a bear anymore.

Stick it in to some clay and leave it to dry.

Repeat this for as many bears as you want to use.

The bears will go really clear and shiny.

When the bears are dry get a needle and some elastic.

Thread some beads on to a bracelet and then thread a teddy on.

Repeat until you have made a full bracelet.

Magazine Sushi

Cut long strips from white, green and orange magazine pages, about 1" wide.

Take one of the orange strips and roll it up in to a little cylinder. Glue it down at the end.

Make 3 of these and stick them together.

Take a white strip and wrap it around the 3 cylinders. Continue round and round, gluing on new white strips, until the sushi becomes a nice size.

When you're happy with the size of the sushi. Take a green strip and wrap it around, gluing in place.

I made a couple of tiny sushi rolls and turned them in to earrings.
