Troubleshooting Tips for a New Sound Card

The following advises are based on many years of experience. They are provided as a free service to our customers and visitors. No sound is heard from audio (music) CDs
Various conditions may cause this problem. To troubleshoot, check the following:- Microsoft Volume Control or your mixer program mute options and volume sliders.
- Connect headphones to the stereo phone jack on your CD-ROM drive’s front panel; adjust the volume control settings on the drive. If there is sound from your headphones, check the CD audio cable connection from the CD-ROM drive to the audio card.
- Ensure the speakers are properly connected to the audio card’s output connector.
To troubleshoot, check the following:- The audio card joystick port conflicts with another joystick port in the system. Disable the audio card joystick port, and use the system’s joystick port.
- The joystick drivers, MSJSTICK.DRV and VJOYD.VXD, may not be installed. Uninstall the joystick, then reinstall to load the drivers. The drivers should come with the driver CD or floppy diskette with your sound card.
A hardware conflict may cause the computer to hang or restart during the installation procedure. Check the following to resolve the conflict:- A hardware conflict with another device in your system.
- Previously installed sound card hardware or software needs to be removed.
- The audio card is not seated in the slot properly.
- PCI bus mastering devices may be interfering with the operation of the audio card. Temporarily remove non-essential PCI bus mastering devices.
Hardware conflicts occur when two or more devices contend for the same resources. Conflicts between your audio card and another device may occur regarding the I/O address, IRQ line, or DMA channel:- Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog appears.
- Click the Device Manager tab. In the Device Manager, a plus sign(+) represents an expandable list of items. A minus sign (-) represents an expanded list. A circled exclamation mark denotes a conflict.
- Double-click Sound, video, game controllers. A list of multimedia devices appears.
- Select your audio card.
- Choose the Propertis button.
- Click the Resources tab.
- Uncheck the Use automatic settings option.
- Change "Settings based on:" if alternate settings are available.
- Determine the conflict by reviewing the "Conflicting device list".
- Select the conflicting item in the "Resource Settings" list.
- Click the Change Settings button.
- Use the mouse to select a new setting.
- Select OK to close each of the properties windows, and restart your computer.
To manually configure your audio card for Windows 95/98:- Click "Start" on the taskbar, and select Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Control Panel. The Control Panel group appears.
- Double-click the Add New Hardware icon. The Add New Hardware Wizard dialog appears.
- Select Next to continue.
- Choose Yes to have Windows search for new hardware, then select Next
- Select Next to continue.
- Select Finish, and follow the prompts to complete the new hardware installation.
To enable the "Audio insert notification" feature:- Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog appears.
- Click the Device Manager tab. A list of devices appears.
- Double-click CD-ROM, and select your CD-ROM drive.
- Choose the Properties button. The CD-ROM drive properties dialog appears.
- Choose the Settings tab.
- Click the "Auto insert notification" option to enable.
- Select OK until all Properties dialogs are closed, and restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Verify the following:- Check the Microsoft Volume Control or the Audio Mixer Program mute options and volume sliders.
- Ensure the speakers are properly connected to the audio card’s output connector.
- Check the volume control and power connection of the speakers, if they are amplified. (Refer to the speakers documentation for detailed information).
- Ensure a hardware conflict does not exist between your audio card and another device in your system.
- PCI bus mastering devices may be interfering with the operation of the audio card. Temporarily remove non-essential PCI bus mastering devices. If the device is a display card, upgrade the display card drivers, or set the card to the default Windows VGA mode.
Static sounds are heard in wave files
Check to see if the static sounds are heard in all wave files. If the difficulty occurs only with certain games, refer to the software manufacturer’s documentation. To troubleshoot static sounds heard in all wave files:- Try different resource settings for the audio card, or set the card to use low DMA.
- Move the audio card to another PCI slot. Feedback from the power supply or another device may be responsible.

Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer6 and Outlook Express 6
According to Microsoft, if you are having trouble with either Internet Explorer 6 or Outlook Express 6 because of damaged files or missing registration information (XP registration trouble, not your name and address) you will need to either reinstall or repair the affected installation. I'm going to go over two ways that Microsoft suggests for dealing with IE6 and OE6 problems. Read over the entire article before making a decision about which method to use. At the end of Method II I've mentioned what I'd consider the best solution to this problem.
Method I
One likely cause of IE6 and OE6 not functioning properly is a corrupted file. Microsoft says this is the "most" likely cause, but I think that's wishful thinking. To run a check on the files and see if one or more is corrupted use the System File Checker that is included with Windows XP.
Click [Start] [Run] and type sfc /scannow in the [Open] box.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD ROM. If you don't have it available there is no point in continuing unless you have the files available on your hard drive and have changed the location of the XP installation files in the registry. If you do have the files copied to the hard drive, the default install location may be modified using the registry edit shown below.
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value) // Value Name: SourcePath
Setting for Value Data: [Set using the path to the installation files, i.e. G:\WXPCCP_EN]
Exit Registry and RebootRunning System File Checker is not a fast process. The machine I use for the majority of my everyday work is only a P-III 866 with 784MB RAM and a 20GB/5400 RPM C drive and it took between 7-8 minutes running off the hard drive. Expect much longer times if you run from the CD. Once the System File Checker has finished, reboot and test to see if the problem has been resolved. If the problem still exists you have three choices.

Reinstall Windows XP
Since I'm 100% against upgrade installations of XP I won't recommend that option. A repair of Windows XP may solve the problem, but the fact the problem arose in the first place makes me suspect of the current installations overall integrity. I suggest a complete reinstall of XP after backing up all data files. However, before you select any of the above choices, look at Method II below.
Method II
The second method to try and correct the problem involves editing the registry and reinstalling Internet Explorer 6. The standard cautions apply whenever you are editing the registry. If you need help on how to backup the registry, click here.
If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer 6, proceed as follows:

Change the values in both of the registry keys as outlined above.
Exit RegistryOnce you have made the appropriate registry changes use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6. The Internet Explorer 6 download includes Outlook Express 6. Reboot and test for proper operation.
It's my site so now I get to tell you how I'd deal with this situation. Really, neither of the methods above that Microsoft recommends are bad, but my approach would be to first run the System File Checker from Method I, but stop short of doing any of the upgrade, repair, or reinstall options. If that didn't solve the problem, I'd go to Method II and reinstall IE6 and OE6. If that still didn't solve the problem I'd head back to Method I and do a complete reinstall of XP. It's still my contention that piling fixes and repairs onto a damaged operating system is just postponing the inevitable reformat.
I received an interesting e-mail in regard to the procedures listed on this page. I haven't actually tried the procedure as it was described by the user, but it makes sense and could easily be a very valuable piece of information to have tucked away. The e-mail is below. Partly thanks to your site I can send this e-mail because my Outlook Express malfunctioned. But I had to add some trick I "discovered" myself which, in my opinion, should be added to the relevant TEG-page (http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm).
To be as short as possible: my OE said it missed the file MSOE.dll or something, so I went looking and found that page. I did the System File Checker (no result), and then did the OE-only registry trick. Having downloaded the IE-installer, it said it found a newer version of IE on my computer so it didn't reinstall OE (and, of course, IE neither). IE functioned properly so I didn't want to spend time on a complete IE/OE reinstall (I assume I would lose my own IE settings, so therefore I refrained from doing that).
Trying to find some sort of /repair switch with the IE-installer (ie6setup.exe downloaded from the Microsoft website), which did not exist, I tried the /? switch in the run box which revealed a box, saying there was (amongst more) a /Q switch which disabled the installer prompt. And woohoo! without the prompt the installer seemed to skip the version check and went over to the OE reinstall, leaving IE untouched and here I am e-mailing again. (Oh, there was no reboot necessary after the reinstall, it OE worked well right away.)
So, in short: consider to add the remark that entering the IE-installer path in the Run box and adding the /Q switch will prevent the installer from checking upon the installed IE version.

A brief history: The Hand-Me-Down PC was originally written in 1995, and large parts were posted online on my GNN website, then moved to the Dailey International site. An expanded version of the book was sold to McGraw-Hill and published by them in 1997. The book has since gone out of print and I've recovered the rights to update this website. The value of second hand computers has changed radically since I wrote the original book a decade ago. My intention in this update is to ignore discussion of repairs and upgrades that simply aren't cost effective, and to focus on the practical use and life extension of older PC's. I've preserved the original book for sentimental value and for folks who are still nursing along pre-Pentium era PCs. The core of the original book was troubleshooting second hand computers, and I've since done a complete book of troubleshooting flowcharts for hardware, with interactive versions on my other website for PC repair. I've also done a whole series of illustrated pages for replacing PC components for either upgrades or repairs. These pages will be linked directly from the text, as will the pages for laptop repair. When I first wrote this guide, the main mechanism for the spread of computer viruses was the floppy disk, and the Internet was just catching on with the public. Now it's normal to sell new PC's without floppy drives, and I can't imagine anybody taking the time to write a virus to infect one. The original book barely touched on the topic of second hand laptops, because they were so expensive that nobody was going to give away used notebook computers until they were basically useless. Now, there are millions of second hand laptops on the market, though they are almost always overpriced in comparison to simply buying an inexpensive new laptop with rebates. Illustrated Laptop Repairs and Upgrades
One laptop failure that is usually worth repairing is the hard drive. Laptop hard drives have a higher failure rate than desktop hard drives, assumedly because they get bounced around more while operating. Notebook computer hard drives come in two flavors - the ones that are easy to get at, just a single screw or a even a slide in component, and those that require you to crack the laptop open. This Sony VAIO laptop hard drive repair is one of the latter. One of the few upgrades you can actually do on a notebook computer is the memory, and then only if the maximum isn't already installed. Memory upgrades are usually pretty trivial, providing you purchase the correct upgrade component. A 256 MB Toshiba laptop memory upgrade is illustrated. Notebook computer LCD screens rarely suffer from electronic failures, a dim screen or failure to work at all is usually due to the inverter, backlight or video controller. However, sometimes the screen gets cracked, or the LCD develops so many bad pixels that it drives you nuts, so I illustrated replacements for a number of different models, starting here with a Powerbook LCD replacement. When your laptop screen works, but is so dim that you can only read it in a dark room after eating carrots all day, the problem is likely the backlight or the inverter. Replacing a Dell notebook backlight provides a somewhat standard illustration, and I show how to replace a Sony laptop inverter for variety. All the screen related laptop repairs are highly similar, in fact, the components are often made by a single manufacturer, with Sharp being a leading supplier. Q. What kind of computers do you work on?
A. We have the capability to work on all types of computers, both PC and Macintosh, desktop and laptop.Q. How long will I be without my computer?
A. It really depends on the service that is required. Generally, the more complex the problem, the longer it takes, i.e. if your computer won't boot, chances are you're not going to get your computer back the same day. You can expect to hear something (a status report) within 3 days, if not before.Q. Its Friday morning and I need my machine back before the weekend to do research. Is that possible?
A. Depending on the current state of our workload, maybe. Keep in mind, however, that we service machines on a first come first serve basis. If it's Friday morning and there are 4 machines in front of yours, chances are you're better off keeping it for the weekend and bringing it in on Monday, even though we do try to have all current machines done by Friday at 4 pm (excluding submissions after noon (12 pm) on Friday).Q. How will I know when to come get my computer?
A. We will call you and let you know when it's done. Most machines are done within 2-3 days of when they are submitted for service, but we will call you after 3 days to let you know what is going on.Q. Do you sell computer hardware (parts)?
A. We do not sell any parts.Q. Well, if you don't sell parts, how am I supposed to get my new [hard disk, power supply, motherboard, memory, etc.]?
A. Depending on what it is you need, we can recommend a store to purchase it. If it is a proprietary part (meaning that it has to be from a certain company to work in your machine) we will do our best to find an outlet online that sells that product. We do not guarantee that our findings will be the cheapest, nor do we have any sort of affiliation with any online stores.Q. Do you work on machines in foreign languages?
A. Yes, though occasionally it may be necessary for us to make an appointment with you to help us translate any unknown error messages. We are relatively clever, but linguists we are not.Q. What about printers and monitors? Do you repair them?
A. We do not have the diagnostic equipment needed to troubleshoot true hardware issues with printers, i.e. we can't really determine why it's making that funny noise when you print or why there's a puddle of ink on your desk, or why the monitor won't power on. If, however, you believe that the problem is related to the drivers (the software that runs your printer) or video card, we will most certainly take a look at it. The basic rule of thumb is this: we will test any hardware, but depending on the problem, we may or may not be able to repair it.Q. What about other peripherals such as digital cameras, scanners, et al?
A. You must bring in the camera/scanner, and whatever software came with the peripheral before we can work on it. We do not attempt to fix mechanical problems with cameras or scanners.Q. I heard you do free upgrades of Windows machines (from Windows 95 to Windows 98, for example). Is that true?
A. We cannot perform upgrades without a license for the software from Microsoft. The license is often found on the Windows manual that came with your computer, or sometimes on a label physically attached to your machine. Basically, our policy is this: "No License, No Upgrade."Q. Why doesn't X program work after I get home?
A. Although we try very hard to ensure that your computer is in perfect working condition when it is returned to you, there is no way that we can check every single program on your computer to make sure it works. Usually uninstalling and reinstalling the rogue program will fix the problem, and the Help Desk is open 8 am to 10 pm Monday through Thursday to help you with any problems you might have. If, however, you are having problems with any Microsoft product, feel free to bring it back and we'll take a second look at it, as problems in one Microsoft application often lead to problems with the entire system.Q. Can my friend come pick up my computer for me?
A. Yes, if you give us the name of that friend either by phone before they come or when you drop off your computer for service. Please provide their full name and (if available/applicable) KUID number. These measures are for your safety and ensure that no one but you or someone you authorize can pick up your computer. We also require a photo ID when you pick up your machine for extra verification of your identity.Q. What about privacy? You ask for an awful lot of information…

Computer is still under warranty
If your computer is still covered under warranty, it is recommended you contact the manufacturer of the computer for information on where you may take your computer. Many times the warranty will cover the parts and/or labor for the repair if done through an authorized repair center.

Computer component is under warranty but the computer is not
If a component within the computer that is under warranty needs to be replaced and/or repaired, it is recommended that you contact the place of purchase or the manufacturer of that particular product for steps on how it can be exchanged or repaired under warranty.

How do I know if a component is under warranty?
When purchasing a hardware device, like any other product, it will have a warranty for so many days, months, or years. If you have purchased the computer component that is currently failing, the documentation or receipt should indicate how long the warranty is. If you no longer have the documentation or are unsure about the warranty, contact the manufacturer of the computer component and/or the place of purchase.
If the hardware component that has failed came pre-installed in your computer, it will have the same warranty as the computer.
Computer and computer component is out of warranty or has no warranty
If the computer and computer components are no longer in any type of warranty, you can take your computer to any local computer repair center. If you believe a component in your computer is bad, you may wish to consider simply replacing that product with a new product instead of taking it to a repair store. Many of the components within a computer are not repairable and it is usually cheaper to simply replace the component.
At this time, Computer Hope does not have a listing of computer repair centers throughout the United States and the rest of the world. - The best way to describe the motherboard goes along well with my human body analogy that I used for the CPU. The CPU is the brain, and the motherboard is the nervous system. Therefore, just as a person would want to have fast communication to the body parts, you want fast communication between the parts of your computer. Fast communication isn't as important as reliable communication though. If your brain wanted to move your arm, you want to be sure the nervous system can accurately and consistently carry the signals to do that! Thus, in my opinion, the motherboard is the second most important part of the computer.
- The motherboard is the circuit board to which all the other components of the computer connect in some way. The video card, sound card, IDE hard drive, etc. all plug into the motherboard's various slots and connectors. The CPU also plugs into the motherboard via a Socket or a Slot.
