I would love to have wine
with my dinner on special occasions such as holidays. I would feel
sort of normal again. But I am afraid to mix alcohol with meds. I
can't wait to see how the group deals with this.

You should ask your doctor.
Typically type 2 does not require insulin, but that is not always
the case. Your doctor will know, and you should know so you know
how to work with your disease best. There is so much I am learning
about type 2, but I know very little about how type 1 works. And
they are different. |

In the Glycemic Index it
mentions that consuming alcahol (or vinegar) with a meal helps our
BG. The vinegar is working for me some, maybe I need to give this a
try. Is it only Red wine or will a blush work?

I will have to pick that up
and give it a try. I am not a big wine drinker, so it will be
interesting. It is at just one meal a day or more? For example,
should I drink 2 oz at lunch and 2 oz at dinner or just 4 oz at
dinner? Maybe what I should be doing is drinking red wind vinegar!!

when i asked my docter
about the whole drinking thing he told me the only thing he says i
should drink is red wine.he told me it would be ok to have a glass
or two with dinner not everday but when i am out on whenever yea
know.and also good for the heart he was saying.so i have not drank
since i found out but now since i asked i have some wine when i am
hanging oput or going out to dinner and so on and my numbers were
good later.

This is indeed a break
through for me. I have not had any wine since I was diagnosed3
years ago. I just went to High School reunion and I would have fely
wonderful if I could have had a glass of wine with dinner like
everyone else.

Well, I am disappointed,
but not giving up. I tested this morning and was 20 points HIGHER
than I have been running all week. BUT, I did have a juice drink
with my meal last night, so maybe that is it. I will keep trying
it, because as we all know, we can fluxuate if you look at us
funny! LOL

Oh Darn, maybe it's a
combination of things you mentioned. I test twice a day, mornings
and 2 hours after I start me evening meal. Dr told me that your BG
rises upon food intake so my Dr said test after to see how the
foods I am eating effect my BG.

suppose to control through diet and exercise. Working on the diet
part, it's hard to find out all the foods you love and have eaten

Another member gave me a
number for Freestyle lite that comes with discounted strips. I am
going to give them a call. My mom said it isn't great to have two
different types of meters, but once I find one that is close to a
doctor results, then I will stick with that. I need accuracy, I put
too much trust in them to find out that they are not reading
propperly. I don't have a fancy one now, but it is what I have, so
I work it.

Lite and have had problems with 3 of them. In each case Abbott labs
has sent a new one with 100 strips each time. They also asked me to
try their Precison, I have. The reading are much different then the
Freestyle. I will tell you that where I live, 100 test strips for
either of those meters are over $100.00 for 100. Abbott did mention
that they have a low cost program, check it out and let me
know. |

I am not under a doctor's
care, but follow my mom's routine. I suppose if you want a true
reading you would do before and after. I am not giving up at all,
just noting the progress. Just like everything, I belive it takes
several weeks to find a true benefit. Besides, like you said, I
have 4 bottles to work thru. Though now I am going to be sharing
with my mom and husband.

This morning, I was back on
track with my numbers. 16 points lower in 24 hour test, and 13
lower than my after dinner test last night. My usual trend it to be
higher in the morning than my nite time reading. |

Sheesh! This is why this
disease is so frustrating. Tonight I ate my meal, tested before and
had a beautiful low (for me) number. 2 hours later I was UP 60
points!! My meal was a little high on the sugar counts, apple,
bulgur and glazed chicken....bummer. Combinations,
combinations...that is always the key. We will see what the morning
says.

Yesterday, I was not able
to drink my evening intake as I was on the road. This morning my
numbers were much the same as last week. I did have better mid day
numbers. However tonight, my 2 hr reading was 50 points UP, and I
had salad, grilled chicken and 1/2 cup fresh fruit. I am thinking
that this type of wine is not working as well, I was drinking the
Cabernet...New bottle tomorrow and we try another strength. We will
have to see. I think the Shivaz works best so far. It is
redder.

Have not had any alcohol

I had a day like that a
while back. Where I work there is nothing but junk food and
expensive dining. I usually pack a salad and snacks, but I ran out
of time that morning. I ate 2 checker burgers (no fries) I just
knew I was going to regret it....I was surprised like you. It is so

Gabby, yeah my Dr said corn
is one of the worst things for a diabetic. I cave into soft server
ice cream but it does elevate me alot so I have to leave it alone.
I buy sugar free ice cream and put it in the microwave to soften it
and pretend I'm having a soft serve. Also put sugar free fudge
topping on it. Works out good. My worst time is at night in front
of the TV...I keep peanuts out, suppose to be good. However I get
into other stuff sometimes..bad, bad, bad....

Today is a good day. My
moring numbers were the lowest they have been in over a month. I
have had lower, but I am greatly encouraged. I was 31 points lower
than my 24 hour read yesterday morning. Man, if I could just once
have a morning reading of even 150 I would be soooooo happy. I
think we might be on to something. I drop during the day
usually...so my after dinner read tonight should be very
interesting.

Husbands, you gotta love
'em. We divide our evening cooking between 4 of us and tonight was
burgers, fries and salad. I gave my merlot a big test tonight. I
had one of the lowest before dinner numbers I have EVER had, and
that is good. BUT my numbers were elevated by 87 points. I think I
found a trouble food in potatoes. I have never been able to check
it before. The good news is that even with such a rise, I was still
lower than I was running last week after dinner...so that is GREAT
news.

You'll find that being 'out of wack' seems to be the norm for this
diabetes stuff. You should be happy with the over all results of

Again my numbers are lower
in the AM. Since using wine with my dinner last week, I have
dropped my AM numbers consistantly by 25 points, which is great
because my AM is usally the highest number of my day. I drop during
the day, even when I eat, so if my PM after meal keeps going down,
my AM will follow suite...at least that is what my brain thinks, my
body on the other hand may have different ideas. LOL

My mom has joined on
occassion. Vinegar works well for her. Better than it did for me. I

Isn't that so true. Once we
think we have our bodies figured out, they drop a bomb on us. Keeps
life interesting doesn't it. Tonight, my after dinner number was
just up by 31 points, so it seems that I am keeping well within the
ADA recommended after meal increases of 30-70 points. Now that that
it is in a good range, if I can just get my overall numbers lower,
I will be very happy. |

200. I think I'm at the 'pre' stage. 6.5 and over is diabetic to
blood Dr's, 7.0 is diabetic according to the ADA...So I'm in the

that is what has me thrilled. I am also doing a vegitarian routine
for the month of August and I know that has something to add to it,

My numbers today have been
elevated and tonight I had a 90 point rise! YIKES. I am trying to
eat vegitarian this month and I had a pasta salad tonight and it
kind of messed me up I think. It is the hightest number I have had
for two weeks. I did have good numbers before dinner, but I messed
up. Tomorrow is a new day though.

Our grocer didn't have
Dreamfield pasta and we bought a whole grain "good for you pasta",
but it still doesn't do as well as Dreamfiled. No bread with
dinner. I'm not a big bread fan, which is a huge help! LOL My thing
is pasta, and I pretty much cut it out until I heard about
Dreamfield. Unfortunately, my step daughter cooks pasta with almost
every meal that she cooks for the household...so I just try to eat
around it.

a crazy last couple of days, but I have to say that I have had some
good numbers. I had a 175 before dinner tonight, but I missed my 2
hr test, as I had to go grocery shopping. It will be intersting, as
this weekend we are going to a convention. It is going to be two
days, so I joked and told my hubby that we had to find a restaraunt
tomorrow night that serves red wine. I am thinking I am going to be
using wine on a regular basis.

What I have been doing is
drinking up to 1/2 cup of wine at dinner. Sometimes I do it at
lunch, but only if I am home for the day. My body is getting used
to it, in the begining I would sweat like I ran a mile. Now I don't
suffer that, and it really seems to have lowered my numbers. I am
still working on which one does the best for me. |

1978 and before that I was a drunk my diet was grilled chees and a
bottle of scotch daily I did not know how to cook and did not have
a glass so i used a funnel for the scotch then one day I got up and
said enough is enough so I quit drinking and got a g/f to teach me
how to cook. |

went up 7 points. The start of the week was good, but I think the

cause high BG without a doubt. Problem is, not sure how to avoid
stress in our everyday lives. Maybe a bottle of red wine....haha,

My numbers today were much
more to my liking and I had one of my lowest pre dinner readings
for a few weeks. Yep, stress is a bummer and I thought that I
managed it pretty well, but I think the numbers tell me different.
Tonight was my first big workout at the gym, and I did a good work
out, so I am interested in how my AM will read...But tomorrow is
the Court Hearing, and the Hurricane is going to be rolling
in...sheesh. Well at least I get it all at once, and maybe after it
is all done, I can be back to normal. LOL

Well, you all won me over.
I went out and bought myself some Merlot. That was 3 days ago and I
have not opened the bottle yet simply because I did not think about
it at dinner. So as soon as my memory serves me, I'll let you know
what Merlot did for me. Hopefully, it will be good news. |

Good, good day. I think the
stress of this week had really built up last week in anticipation.
Now that some of that has passed and the storm is not so bad
(though I am tired of rain) My numbers were much more in line. In
fact, this morning, I had my best AM reading since I have been
tracking it. I think my wine of choice is going the be the Shiraz.
It seems to work best.

Good to know you are okay
with that storm hanging around in Florida. I know the to much rain
feeling, I live in Western Washington and we get more then enough

The Shiraz is a little more
bitter. It warms me up a bit, but it seems to be the best for me. I
like the taste of the merlot best, but I am not drinking it for
flavor, but for results. so when I want to drink for "fun" I still
like the "fake" wines of Arbor Mist. But for my serious drinking
(lol) I use Yellow Tail Shiraz.

improving? Mine are gradually coming down. I do a 7 and 14 day
average and each week they are lower...Yeah!

I have a little bump again
these past two days. Found another food I cannot eat...tortilla
chips. I did find that the bean dip I made to go with the chips is
great on CELERY!! So from now on, the family can have the chips and
I will eat it on celery. I still get the crunch, but without the
carbs.

Atkins Advantage, Dark Chocolate Royale Shake to take care of my

I know I have a long way to
go, but it is encouraging to see how far I have come in just a few
weeks. I had my lowest ever weekly average last week with a 208. I
know it is still high, but it is lower than I have had since march
and that makes it worth it to me.

everyone's stories of trying and testing to substatiate the effects

Well here is another
applaude for Red Wine. I was away for 3 days to a trade show. I
walked and lifted and exercised more than I usually do. I ate less
and kept on my veggie, salad meal system. I was at a FOOD show, and
managed to stay away from all the wonderful smelling goodies that
were passed out...and still, my numbers were UP these past few
days. The only thing that was missing was my wine...my wonderful
red wine. So tonight, it is back on the menu!

I have been doing pretty
well. Yes, being on the road is a hard thing to do when you have a
routine at home. I was at a trade show working hard, eating right
and my numbers were high. I got so frustrated, I just ate Chinese
food the last day there.

My average rise after
dinner is staying pretty low, and for that I am greatful. I still
am working on getting my overall numbers down. It is so very
slow....but at least I am going in the right direction. |

I had been reading all of
these posts for a few days now and decided to give the red wine a
try. I got Sutter Home Merlot and loved it. But the one question I
have is when is everyone drinking it. Before dinner, during or
after or before bed. I have been drinking it after dinner and then
about 10 pm I take my metformin and the past 2 mornings have been
great. One was 122 and this morning was 105. The lowest I have ever
been in the mornings. So if it is the red wine that is doing it. It
works and I love it. Just wanted to now when everyone was drinking
it.

wine. It seems to blend better with food. However if drinking it
after dinner works for you should be nothing wrong with that. |

I also read that the redder
the better so i looked for the darkness merlot bottle I saw. I had
not bought wine in years because I thought it was bad for
diabetics. Plus the Sutter Home was not expensive. My bottle was
6.99. But had to buy a wine opener too. LOL |

You see, after the birth of my third daughter, I was delighted at how quickly I was losing weight. But even as I found that my favorite jeans fit me again, I knew something wasn't quite right. I was so thirsty all the time and my vision was sporadically blurry.
Finally, I went to see the doctor. You probably know how shocking it is to receive a phone call that tells you to get to the hospital right away or you might fall into a coma. I was 37 and had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Finger pricks, insulin injections, constantly worrying about food and exercise—these are the life of a diabetic. And now they were my life.
Since then I've tried to find ways to connect with, learn from, and share the best information with other diabetics and their friends and families. That's why I got involved with Diabetic Connect. I just want to say that I read a book called "Diabetes the First Year" and in that book it said if you are not on insulin that a 1/2 glass of red wine with your meal will keep your blood glucose down.
I'm not a wine drinker but went a bought a bottle of Merlot and have been drinking a 1/2 glass with dinner and getting wonderful results.
Case in point, I ate Chinese Chow Mein (noodles) and Fried Prawns for dinner last night and my BG was 81..never been this low after a meal, always in the mid to high 100's. I am so pleased with my results and just have to share with everyone.
