Dire Straits haven't been in the
news for what, 25 years, but they're back in the headlines thanks
to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. The CBSC has ruled
that Dire Straits' hit 'Money For Nothing' has been ruled "too
offensive to be broadcast on Canadian radio.
The Dire Straits 'Money for Nothing' ban came after a listener to
radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's, Newfoundland complained that
the 1985 song includes the word “faggot.”
The offending Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing' lyrics are "See the
little faggot with the earring and the makeup, Yeah buddy that’s
his own hair. That little faggot got his own jet airplane. That
little faggot he’s a millionaire."
The CBSC ruled that 'Money For Nothing' can be broadcast on radio
if it's substantially edited.
The song Money For Nothing was supposed to be about a couple of
working class guys watching MTV and complaining about pampered rock
stars.
