"Speculative buying has displaced fundamental demand," says John Reade, an analyst with UBS Investment Bank, "and that's usually an indication that the gold market has gotten carried away with itself." If gold were priced purely on supply and demand, it would be at about $500 an ounce. Nevertheless, Reade expects the weak dollar to push the price up past $750 an ounce by next year.
