Differences between google.co.uk and google.com

Recently while working on some of our clients sites I have been noticing some really big differences between the rankings for some sites in google.co.uk and google.com

I first noticed the problem with a new website we created for Kim’s Chilled Couriers, a local haulage firm who offer refrigerated transport and frozen transport. Monitoring the keywords in google.co.uk was providing some very disappointing rankings. One day, using the search box in firefox I searched for “chilled couriers” and the site was ranked in the first result. I wasn’t signed in to my google account so the listing hadn’t been voted up using the search wiki, but the search box in firefox searches in google.com, not google.co.uk. It was clear, that despite our efforts, Google was not associating the site to the UK.

I thought this was quite surprising. Admittedly the site does have a .com url, but it is hosted on our server in the UK, the geo target had been set to UK in the Google Webmaster Tools and the site was listed in Google Local.

I asked on various forums to get help with the problem. Some of the suggestions that I received:

- Build more UK links

- Add UK to the title tags

- Add UK to the address on the page footer

- Add United Kingdom to the address on the Contact page

- Submitting the site to local directories

It was also suggested to change the html < html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> tag to this:

< html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-gb" lang="en-gb">

Over the last few months a combination of these factors have helped the site to rank much higher in google.co.uk. Here are the screen shots from google.co.uk & .com

As you can see the site is still ranking slightly higher in .com, but the rankings in co.uk have really improved recently – at one point they were about 80 positions out!.

This example clearly demonstrates that, given a choice, it is a much more sensible option to choose the local domain associated with the main target users. We were asked to use the .com address in this case as they had already used it in the past.

The Kim’s Chilled Couriers site is solely focused to people who are based and searching in the UK, I firmly believe that if we had been able to use the .co.uk address, it would have taken far less effort to improve the google.co.uk rankings.

They are safe, confidence inspiring and can be mastered in only a few minutes by anyone from 12 to 80.

Segway Woodland Trek

After an initial training session your party will set off on a 20-25 min trek accompanied by our trained staff. They will guide you across challenging areas of the 150 acres of woodland.

Due to the nature of this unique mode of transport it is important that all participants understand that they must reach the required level of competency during the training in order to take the Segway Off Road.

Segway taster & Relay Race

Take part in a Segway X2 relay race for an unforgettable experience. They are great fun, like nothing you have ever experienced before and thrilling to ride.

This event is ideal for larger groups that want to have a go at riding the Segway but have a limited amount of time. The event will include all instruction on the correct riding style before the teams are formed to race head to head around our relay obstacle course.

We can race up to 3 teams of up to 18 people on the head to head course and the whole event should run for approximately 1 hour.

Segway X2 Training

Each event will start with an introduction to the machine on a 1-1 basis, so that everyone has the chance to become familiar with the Segway and how it operates.

All participants must reach the desired level of competence before taking part in any further sessions. Failure to reach the required level of competence may prevent riders progressing to the next event stage.

How long does this activity last?

A Segway X2 Woodland Trek for a group of 4 people would take approx 50-60 minutes.

A Segway X2 Taster and relay race for a group of 8-18 people would take approx 60-75 minutes

Is there a minimum group size?

The minimum number for the Segway X2 trek is 4 people while for the Segway taster it is 8 people.

When is the event available?

Available Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, other days may be available please call our office for more details.

Unfortunately we can’t control the weather over Nottingham - but only in the event of high winds would the event be cancelled as we are based in woodland.

It’s almost time to dust off the Christmas decorations again and definitely time to start the Christmas shopping. A lot of people will be wondering how they are going to be able to celebrate this special time this year, without getting further into debt.

Here are a few ideas for saving on the Christmas spend while still having a great time:

Remember to use store loyalty cards such as Nectar, Boots Advantage and Tesco Clubcard when shopping for presents or Christmas party treats.
Recycle last year’s Christmas cards by cutting the pictures out and sticking them on a blank card (which you can buy in bulk).
Plan how you want to spend money by prioritising what is most important to you and your family. Don’t spend unnecessarily.
Budget carefully when it comes to presents.
