1001: A really cool Flickr client

The old adage that 'a picture is worth 1000 words' is still going nice and strong. Considering the sheer number of pictures that Flickr is hosting these days, that could be a lot of stories to sift through - why not try out a desktop app to help with all the work?

1001 is a unique Flickr client from Adriaan Tijsseling, developer of the Mac version of blogging app ecto (the one with a slick new alpha version) and RSS newsreader endo. In addition to letting you upload your own photos to Flickr, I think 1001's primary appeal lies in its downloading and viewing abilities. It provides rich features for watching the stream of photos from your friends and groups, filtering the public photo stream with tags, blogging (of course) photos you like, displaying a Growl-like popup with certain photos you want to see and even using photo as your desktop wallpaper or screensaver. It's a really interesting way to interact with Flickr, and the only downside is a somewhat unique UI that might make it a little confusing to navigate 1001 your first time through. For a quick primer: 1001 allows you to pull down these photos by setting up one or more 'streams' that specify exactly what photos you want to see. You can create one stream for, say, just your friends (or even specific friends), and another for Flickr's popular Interestingness page. You can then toggle the different streams on and off depending on your mood, allowing you keep the streams from becoming a flood. Be sure to use the Streams button in 1001's toolbar, or check out the Streams menu to get started.

All things considered, this really is a great app for Flickr enthusiasts or even newbies starting out. Once you get over the very brief learning curve, 1001 is a powerful app that lets you view just the Flickr photos you want and use them in other places on your Mac. But what does all this Flickr wonderfulness (hey, if Flickr can use pseudo-words, so can I) cost, you ask? Surprisingly, it's donationware, and I encourage you to show Tijsseling some appreciation if you enjoy 1001 and would like to see ist development continue.

Flickr Changes Lives, Launches Photog Careers

Flickr pool.JPG With the plethora of social networking sites, it’s easy to come to the quick conclusion that what we are doing on these sites — chatting up strangers, lurking on people’s profiles, spying on friends — is just a waste of time. But there is one site that is more than just an unhealthy habit: Photo-sharing site Flickr is a photography school, art gallery and a sandbox for experimentation. On Flickr, bad photographers get schooled, mediocre ones get better and some even rise to the top as stars — all supported by an immense, and sometimes intimate, international community.

When Flickr founders Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield launched Flickr in 2004 they could not have expected the level of success it’s enjoyed among its users. There were already many other photo-sharing sites out there — among them Yahoo Photos, which would later be replaced by Flickr after Yahoo purchased the site . But none really had the ease of use and the kind of community tools that Flickr offered.

The way Flickr is designed makes discovering new images and new people easy and even fun. Thousands of images are uploaded from around the world every minute, and refreshing the homepage gives you access to random photos you might never have found through a search. Serendipitous encounters also happen by clicking on tags made by users on a photo. Click on the globe icon next to the tag pizza and get ready for a trip around the world via over 70,000 photos from people everywhere. In a way, these tags allow you to see other people’s take on something that’s familiar to you, which can be surprising and fascinating.

I’m an art school veteran, and I know the pain of feeling discouraged about my work by the scrutinizing eyes of academia. When I was in film school, I came to hate photography class because of the way it was taught: hours and hours of theory, playing with light meters, then back to the dark room to see how things came out. Though I had a love for images, try as I might, I couldn’t absorb the information I needed to create beautiful ones. I also didn’t find out that my images were less than perfect until I developed and printed them, which was often a moment of dread. I thought I was a rotten photographer.

After film school I put down the film camera for many years, then in 2005 picked up a cheap digital point-and-shoot. I began uploading careless, admittedly ugly images to a fairly new site called Flickr, mainly to share photos with friends and family. As I did that, I perused other people’s photos, and began to make contact with the people behind the images. My contact base grew as people began to comment on my images and vice versa. Before I knew it, I was beginning to care more about the quality of my photos. I looked at my contacts’ work and wondered, “what kind of camera did they use?” and “how can I get my photos to look like that?” Involuntarily I began learning on Flickr all that I didn’t in my classes, and I gained something beyond technique: a renewed passion for picture-taking.

From Point-and-Shoot to Photo Studio

And I’m not the only one who started learning more from Flickr. Roughly one year ago Flickr user Laretta Houston uploaded her first image onto the service, taken with a point-and-shoot camera. She describes the progression from amateur to pro in a series of milestones: “March 2006 - Bought a cheap DSLR camera…October 2006 - My first gig with Lupe Fiasco…” Today, she’s set up her own studio and is working as a photographer. After one year, a total transformation has taken place, and Houston isn’t alone. There are so many cases of “Joe Schmo to pro” (or at least semi-pro) on Flickr that they’ve almost stopped surprising me.

Daniel Krieger

A contact of mine, Brooklyn-based photographer Daniel Krieger (known as Smoothdude on Flickr) is another success story. He told me that this progression of nobody to somebody in photographic terms is one of the things that make Flickr so special for him. “Being able to watch some regular Joe Schmo buy a camera, hop on Flickr, and develop into a talented photographer with a vision is something revolutionary in the art world, I would say. I don’t think there’s ever been anything like that.”

While that kind of transformation doesn’t happen overnight, in some cases Flickr facilitates and speeds the learning process. Just how one learns on Flickr is really up to the individual, and the process often happens accidentally. When you see a really striking photo, you might ask the photographer how he or she managed it. If you are starting basically from zero, as I was when I joined, you might have lots of questions about lenses, exposure, shutter speed and the like. Flickr users love to give advice, and sometimes you don’t have to ask — others do the asking for you. When Daniel Krieger uploaded a series of really spectacular wedding shots , many users began asking him what techniques he used to shoot them. I made notes on some of his tips for future reference, and that’s how many Flickr photographers learn how to improve their craft.

Krieger himself began like so many others on Flickr, just uploading a few photos to share with others. He joined in January 2005 and says he learned 85% of what he knows about photography from Flickr. That knowledge, gained from peer feedback and the work of the greater Flickr community, has helped make him what he is today: a working professional photographer . Krieger tells me he has several assignments every week and his name is featured on the masthead of a publication.

Support Groups for Photogs

Flickr user Diyosa Carter is a working mom and budding photographer. She began uploading images on Flickr as a way to share pictures of her children with family and friends, but eventually became hooked on the community aspect of the site. “Much of my photography knowledge can be credited to Flickr,” she said. “Through contacts and various groups I understand more about photography and my camera than I could have ever imagined.”

Diyosa recently had one of her images selected for a charity auction celebrating Flickr’s third birthday, and her experience on the site is helping her see her work in a different light. “Flickr has made me see photography as a potential career opportunity for myself,” she said. “Also, in my day-to-day job I have taken on the role of photographer at our events more seriously, seeing them as a form of experience or even portfolio-building opportunities.”

On Flickr, there are also groups built around certain styles of photography, technique or even lenses. If you are primarily a landscape photographer and are interested in breaking into portraits, there are plenty of groups on the site where you can get advice and guidance from people already working in that area. And since Flickr is made up of amateurs and professional photographers alike (and everything in between), the person with the photo next to you could become a sort of an online mentor.

Flickr is truly changing the way photographers learn, work and get discovered. And it’s changed me, too. The site and the community on Flickr have made a tangible and positive impact on my life. I too have gone from playing around with photography to getting real work and beginning to take my pictures seriously. Like many other users, in the Flickr community I’ve found a gallery, a school and a marketplace all in one place. Not bad for $24.95 per year.

There are so many ways to browse through Flickr photos that it’s hard to keep track; since there aren’t many that are actually useful, we’ve chosen another route and brought you 11 very, very weird ones.

Is it fun? Mildly. Is it useful? Not really. But just making that circle swirl gives us a warm, fuzzy feeling.

This is actually quite useful, especially if you’re a designer in need of images that’ll match the color of whatever you’re working on. A good addition to the tool would be some kind of indication of the license for individual images, or possibly a filter that selects only ones under CC license.

Top 10 Hacks on Flickr

One of the nice things about Flickr is that because of their open API a whole host of developers have built more and more interesting things to do with the site. It's interesting to me today that so many of the ways that I use Flickr are not even through the site as designed by Yahoo, but instead through the work of outside developers who are constantly creating new and interesting ways to experience the site. Today I thought I'd share what I think are the top 10 Hacks on Flickr.

This list is by no way exhaustive or complete, but as somewhat of a power user who uses the site every day I thought I'd offer some tools that you might want to try out. One note is that many of the best hacks on Flickr today are being done through Greasemonkey scripts. These will not work with Internet Explorer but will work with Firefox or Flock.

So on with the list.

1. The number one hack for Flickr would have to be Flickrleech. Flickrleech is a site developed by Andrew Houser (who is also a kick ass photographer), or simply Houser as he is often called, with the tagline, "because paging sucks."

When Houser released Flickrleech originally it would allow you to pull up any Flickr user's photos as a full page of thumbnails with no pagination. Although very cool, loading up 7,000 thumbnails wasn't exactly the nicest things to do to Flickr's servers and Houser actually changed his site to load 500 thumbnails at a time and today it sits at 200 thumbnails at a time.

Still, having the ability to browse a flickr user's photos at 200 thumbnails at a time is remarkable and allows you more photos on a single page than anything Flickr offers up themselves.

I'm constantly using Flickrleech to check out a new photographer's photos or to rapid fire go through someone's stream.

2. The number two hack for Flickr is a newer one and was released earlier this month by Intel's Eric Appel and is called SmartSetr. One of the annoying things about Flickr is that when you want to create a set you must do it manually. Even with batch tools this gets tedious and having to add every new photo to a set every single time sucks. So Eric developed SmartSetr. SmartSetr allows you the ability to build sets that are organized around the concepts of tags, dates, and other metadata associated with a photo.

If, for instance, you want to build a set called Neon Days and Neon Nights (like I did) that holds all of your photos of neon signs, by building a SmartSet you can simply tell flickr to add any photo tagged neon to this set. Although SmartSetr isn't dynamic, Eric refreshes your sets for you once a day and things get updated. It's also really cool that you can organize your set by interestingness, so that your best photos show up first in the set -- something you can't do on Flickr. More from Eric directly.

3. The number three hack for Flickr is a greasemonkey one called Flickr Multi Group Sender. It was developed by Steeev (who does some of the best Flickr development work around) One of the problems with Flickr's add to group function is that it is painfully and woefully slow. I'm not sure if this is because Flickr is trying to load up little mini thumbnail icons for every group or if it's something to do with how you access their database but it's weak sauce. But multi group sender makes this much easier. Multi group sender allows the add to groups function for photos on flickr super fast. You can also add to multiple groups at once by simply holding down the control key... opps, I mean command key (I keep forgetting I'm on a Mac).. and selecting another group. Careful with adding your photos to too many groups though. Adding your photo to more than about 10 groups gets you dinged in interestingness.

4. The number four hack for Flickr is another greasemonkey one. This one is called Flickr rich edit and it was written by Jason Rhyley. Sometimes when you say something, you really want to say something. Unfortunately natively Flickr has no rich edit tools and so users must be familiar with how to manually mark up their text or they can just use this tool. By using rich text edit you are able to add rich text edit tools above text boxes on Flickr so that you can better get your point across when you need to.

Flickr Hack #5

5. Tabblo. This is kind of an unusual one. Maybe not so much of a hack, but it sure feels like one. Tabblo is a photosharing site that allows you the ability to customize the feel, layout, tone and design of your photo page. The yin and the yang of Flickr is that everyone's pages look the same. On the one hand this gives Flickr a very elegant, almost like a virtual art gallery or museum feel. On the other hand sometimes people want more customization over how their photos are presented. Some companies like SmugMug make this customization part of how they diferentiate from Flickr. Flickr is torn because while you might like to give users more control over the design of the photos, if you're not careful, the next thing you know the place ends up looking like MySpace.

Enter Tabblo. Tabblo uses the Flickr API to import your photos into their site and then allows you the ability to design a page however you like. The nice thing about Tabblo is that unlike SmugMug the site is free and with a direct Flickr import function makes it super easy to design special custom pages using your Flickr photos. Here's a tabblo with some of my shots from New Orleans last year.

Flickr Hack #6

6. Flickrmud. One of the problems for some Flickr users is that because the site is popular ofentimes it gets blocked. A while back Flickr was being blocked in the entire UAE. There have been reports of libraries blocking Flickr and certainly businesses blocking Flickr who don't want their employees wasting away valuable company time on social networking or seeing the occasional porn shot that creates company liability. While one answer is to simply buy your own laptop with EVDO and bring it to work, this isn't always the most economical approach. But if you are experiencing Flickr blockage somewhere check out FlickrMud. How Flickr mud works is that you simply change the url to access Flickr. Instead of accessing thomashawk's flickrstream like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk. You access it with this url instead: http://www.flickr.mud.yahoo.com/photos/thomashawk. By adding the .mud.yahoo before the .com oftentimes you can access the site because this way of accessing Flickr is much less known and less likely to be blocked. Mum's the word on this one of course ;)

Flickr Hack #7

7. Moo Cards. Again, not so much of a Flickr hack as a tool for the flickr photographer. One of the problems with the outside world (yes even with Stewart and Caterina on the cover of Time magazine, etc. etc.) is that outside your immediate bubble of friends, a whole chunk of the world has no idea what Flickr is. As a photographer out there shooting all the time people will ask me where they can see my work. Even if you say "flickr" "thomas hawk" etc. People will forget. By ordering up some Moo cards (they are only about $25 for 100) you can give these cards out to people when they ask where they can see the shots.

Of course one hack with your Flickr Moo cards is that you don't actually have to send them to your Flickrstream. My Flickr Moo cards have my Zooomr stream ID url on there instead. Opps, did I just say that, Doh!

Flickr Hack #8

8. Slickr. One of the things that is cool about Flickr is that there is an amazing amount of fanastic images online. This is cool and all but Flickr's slide show functionality sucks, it's not full screen, etc. This is where Slickr comes in. Slickr allows you the ability to point Slickr to someone's photostream, your photos marked favorites, etc., etc. and then actually download full high res photos of all of whatever you point it to to your computer. It was developed by Gabriel Hanford. Once on your hard drive you can better make use of these images for your screen saver or for your desktop backgrounds and all that. One of my favorite things to do is to sit back and watch my Media Center PC rotate through my favorites from Flickr on beautiful full high res clarity.

One note with this. You might want to check out the photo license of the photos that you choose to download with Slickr. Although Slickr works with all licenses, technically you'd be breaking the rules by downloading an all rights reserved licensed photo. Creative Commons licensed photos of course (like mine) are free to use for non commercial (in my case) use and if you want to download all of my images for your screen saver, desktop, etc., or even just one of my sets like Superfaves, feel free.

Flickr Hack #9

9. Flickr Friends (formerly Flickr Stalkr). Flickr Friends got off to a rough start originally at Flickr. Developed by James Newbery it was initially named Flickr Stalkr and well, that just didn't sound right and so they saw themselves get nipped in the bud early on. Subsequently though the site relaunched as Flickr Friend Finder and is a way for you to find all of your friends (or ex-girlfriends, opps, did I just say that too?) on Flickr. With Flickr Friend Finder you simply enter in a string of email addresess (or upload your address book to them) and they will return back to you everyone who is on Flickr. You can then add them as friends to make sure to keep tabs on what they are up to photographically speaking. James has the following privacy statement up on his site:

"Your addresses will not be stored anywhere, read by anyone, or made accessible to anyone. Any file you upload will be deleted from the server immediately."

...of course it's up to you whether or not you think it's a good idea or right to use your friend's email addresses this way.

Flickr Hack #10

10. jUploadr. One of the things about Flickr's bulk uploader tool (in my opinion) is that it is not very good. Especially on a Mac it is very slow to load, won't strip the .jpg titles from the names of my photos, etc. jUploader was developed by Steve Cohen and offers a better, faster, way to upload. You can enter in default tags, descriptions, etc. for all of your photos or you can easily select photos to bulk tag/descript before uploading to Flickr. jUploader is also our official uploader for Zooomr as well and if you want to upload your shots to Flickr and Zooomr, once you are done with one you can simply click on the other to send your photos there as well. jUploadr runs on Windows, Linux and OS X.

Until now you have always had to manually create sets on Flickr. You could either go to the Organizer and select photos you wish to add to the set, or you could send photos to sets from the photo's page. With SmartSetr you can now dynamically add your photos to sets by specifying criteria and SmartSetr will create the set and add the matching photos for you.

SmartSets are sets on Flickr that are updated for you in an automated way. For example, if you have a SmartSet based on the tag "flower", anytime you add photos to flickr tagged with "flower" they will automatically be added to your flower set for you (after you click refresh on SmartSetr).

To update the photos contained in your SmartSets you must come to the SmartSetr site and click "Refresh All SmartSets". By clicking refresh, SmartSetr will query Flickr for the photos that match the set criteria and add them to the set. I am currently working on a way to automatically update everyone's SmartSets throughout the day, as well as a bookmarklet to let you manually update SmartSets from anywhere.

There are several types of criteria that you may use to create SmartSets including tags, text, date taken, and date uploaded. You may also filter the SmartSets by privacy level, and you may sort the SmartSets by a variety of criteria including interestingness, etc.

For text based SmartSets there are several search operators that may be used including AND, OR, and NOT. For example, to create a SmartSet that contains all of your photos of red flowers you would create a SmartSet based on the text "flower AND red".

Your Flickr sets that are SmartSets should be fully managed by the SmartSetr site, except that you may change the primary photo for the set on Flickr and reorder your sets on Flickr.

Here are some interesting ideas for SmartSets

All photos taken in 2006 sorted by interestingness
All photos from any year sorted by interestingness
All photos tagged with macro (dependent on your tags)
All photos tagged with certain lenses, i.e. "canon 50mm f/1.8 II" (dependent on your tags)
All photos tagged with the name of a conference, i.e. CES, Macworld

Geek to Live: Flickr Advanced User Guide

Photo-sharing web application Flickr is like an onion: it has many, many layers to discover. Last February I published an article here on Lifehacker called Tips for Flickr beginners, a quick rundown on how to get started on Flickr. One year later I'm still as big a Flickr fan and user as ever, so it's about time to point out some of the more advanced features of the amazing, ever-evolving (yet e-less) service. If you're not already a Flickr member, do head back to the newbie article and get yourself going. If you've already got yourself a Yahoo! account you're halfway there.

Existing Flickr users, follow me. Today we'll go over some of the more advanced but useful features you may not know about in Flickrville.

Choose a friendly photostream URL.

When you first register for Flickr, at first the web address for your Flickr photos is something like this:

http://flickr.com/photos/93376967@N00675/

Which isn't very easy to remember or share. You can set up a "friendly" photostream URL which will look more like:

http://flickr.com/photos/ginatrapani/

Do be careful, though, once you choose your friendly Flickr URL for your photostream, you cannot change it.

Upload photos via email.

Configure your Flickr account to accept photo uploads via email. Flickr will provide you with a secret email address that should go in the To: line of your email message. The title of the photo is the subject line of the email, and the photo description goes in the body of the message.

Upload by email may not sound like that big a deal, but it opens up a whole bunch of possibilities:

Email photos from your cameraphone or PDA
Upload photos directly from Google's Picasa by choosing the photo you want to email and choosing the Email button on the bottom right inside Picasa
Set up a family Flickr account and have your brother-in-law and cousins and sister and aunt all email photos of the kids to the Flickr photostream that Grandma and Grandpa have bookmarked

Power Flickr email tips

You can set a default privacy level and tags for all photos uploaded via email, like "cameraphone" or "moblog" or "via email." However, with a little syntax know-how, override the defaults for individual photos like so:

Specify the photo privacy level
Add a suffix to your super-secret upload by email address to tell Flickr who should be able to see your photo.
Let's say your magic email address was foo13bar@photos.flickr.com. Then you could use:

foo13bar+friends@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends

foo13bar+family@photos.flickr.com - Visible to family

foo13bar+ff@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends and family

foo13bar+private@photos.flickr.com - Only visible to you
Let's say your magic email address was foo13bar@photos.flickr.com. Then you could use:
- foo13bar+friends@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends
- foo13bar+family@photos.flickr.com - Visible to family
- foo13bar+ff@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends and family
- foo13bar+private@photos.flickr.com - Only visible to you
Be sure to add these addresses to your contacts list and email client address book for easy access.
Set additional photo tags
Add a line to your email listing the photos' tags, like so:
tags: cute "black cat"
The tags: bit can either be appended to the end of the message subject line or appear ON ITS OWN LINE in the body of the email message, either like this:

Subject: Jessica tastes peas tags: grimace "baby jessica" peas
Body:
Baby Jessica doesn't like peas.
But she's adorable even spitting out green mush!

Subject: Jessica tastes peas tags: grimace "baby jessica" peas
Body:
Baby Jessica doesn't like peas.
But she's adorable even spitting out green mush!

Or:

Subject: Jessica tastes peas

Note that tags you list in the email will get applied to the photo in addtion to the default upload by email tags.

Blog your Flickr photos.

Lots of web publishing photographers have their own photoblogs but they also want to share their photos on Flickr as well. Luckily it's easy to do both. There are two ways to do so:

Get a secret upload by email address that posts to Flickr AND your blog
Once you set up your weblog information in Flickr, it can post a photo to your blog at the same time it's uploaded via email.
Use the Blog This button

From any one of your own photo pages - or anyone elses' photos which are bloggable - you can hit the Blog This button to post a photo to your site from Flickr. To do this you have to configure Flickr to talk to your weblog as well.

Display Flickr photos on your web site.

Wanna include a strip of Flickr photos on your web site? Perhaps all the photos in your kid's Little League team Flickr group or tagged with conference title you organized, for the team or conference web site? Create a "Flickr Badge", which is a simple snippet of HTML which can include your photos, all public photos with a specific tag, or all the photos in a Flickr group on any public external web site.

Correspond with Flickr photographers.

If you've got a question about a particular photo not fit for comments (or if comments aren't enabled), you're in luck. Flickr has a full-fledged messaging system built into it. Hit the "Send [screen name] a message" link on every member profile in the right-hand column to send a message to any Flickr photographer. You've got a full-on inbox at Flickr yourself. To get to it, hit the envelope next to your screenname at the top of the home page when you're logged in. You can have Flickr messages forwarded to your email address as well. Set up your Notifications preferences here.
