What to Look For When Purchasing a Bike Trailer, Plus Safety Tips
Biking is a great way to stay in shape. It is also great entertainment for your little one, who cannot yet ride their own bike. Bike trailers are made to hold one or more children, and are a great way to spend time with your family while still getting your dose of daily exercise. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing and using a child bike trailer.
When purchasing a bike trailer there are some items you should look for. First, check if your bike has a flexible trailer hitch, so if your bike were to fall over, the trailer would remain upright and your child would not be injured. The bike trailer should also be equipped with shoulder and lap belts, or a 5 point restraint system, as well as a roll bar.
The material covering the bike trailer should have some reflective qualities or include a flag. This is important for making the trailer visible to traffic especially if using in the evening hours.
When using a bike trailer there are a few things to keep in mind. Even though your child is restrained in the trailer and the trailer is equipped with a roll bar, it is still important to wear a helmet. Many bike trailers have recessed areas above the seat to accommodate helmets to make this more comfortable for the child.
You also need to remember that the trailer requires a wider path than the bike. Take turns slower, and avoid uneven ground or curbs. Even though the trailer should have a wide base to prevent rollovers, it can still happen. Most bike trailers come with storage compartments for you to store things like water bottles and snacks. Depending on your intended use be sure to find the model with the correct amount of storage space your needs will require.
By following these tips you and your family can enjoy a safe and fun way to exercise and see the outdoors together.
