Replay the Trading Day Using Automatic Screenshots

Here’s an article that I wrote for the CyberTrader Newsletter a couple months ago:

Have you ever looked back at the end of a trading day and thought “Why in the world did I do that?” Everything seems so obvious at the end of the day, but, of course, traders have to make decisions without the benefit of hindsight. It can be quite helpful to “replay” the day to figure out why you made certain decisions at certain times to determine whether you made mistakes. Taking an honest look at yourself can help you discover ways to improve your trading. Many traders are too quick to sulk about their losses instead of using them for what they are: extremely valuable opportunities for future trading success.

Take a Video? Probably Too Much

There are several ways to record your trading session for future review. It is possible to use a video recording application (such as Camtasia Studio) to capture the tick by tick action of your trading. While this approach would be able to record every possible data point, the videos would result in very large files that would require too much space to store them.

Screenshots - Much More Practical

A far more practical strategy is to take screenshots of your trading platform at regular intervals. There are a few software packages that can be setup to do this automatically without lifting a finger. What you’ll end up with is several image files (in the folder of your choosing) on your computer.

IrfanView Software

You might be surprised to learn that there is a free software package that can do almost everything you need from automatically taking the screenshots of your desktop to replaying them. It is called IrfanView and it’s available as a free download for Windows. Once you’ve installed it, just start IrfanView from the windows start menu. From the Options menu, choose Capture/Screenshot. Here’s the screen that appears.

Select Automatic - timer delay for the capture method and specify the frequency of the screenshots in seconds. Depending on your time frame for trading, you’ll want to specify a frequency that captures enough screenshots, but not so many that it’s too overwhelming to go back and review. I use 5 minutes (300 seconds) which is suitable for my style of trading. Under the Saving method section, choose Save captured image as file and specify the file name format and the destination directory where you’d like the image files stored. I’d suggest using the format “capture_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S” for the file names since sorting by the file name in Windows explorer will also sort them chronologically.

Replaying The Screenshots

IrfanView also comes with a nifty slideshow which is perfect for reviewing your screenshots. From the File menu, choose Slideshow and browse for your screenshots in the Look in section. In the Slide advancement section, choose Automatic after mouse/keyboard input then click Play Slideshow. You can use the left click mouse button to advance to the next screenshot and the right button to go back to the previous one. Hit the Escape key to exit the slideshow.

Capturing Screenshots on Computers with Multiple Monitors

While IrfanView is great for single monitor systems, using it on computers with multiple monitors will only capture the screen from the “primary” monitor, not your entire desktop. To capture your entire viewable desktop on a multiple monitor system you can use a program called Snagit from Techsmith. The current version of Snagit is $39.95 although previous versions are free. Snagit it is a great tool in itself for marking up and drawing on image files (great for taking notes on charts). Snagit does not come with a slideshow viewer, so even if you have multiple monitors you’ll still want to install IrfanView to view your screenshots.

An Example of What You Might Learn

After capturing screenshots of my trading for just a short time, I discovered that the way I had organized my charts during the trading day prevented me from seeing certain opportunities and that I wasn’t utilizing all my screen space effectively. I came up with a strategy to improve the way I situate my charts and it’s given me more confidence knowing that I’ll find more profitable opportunities in the future.

Another program I like to use is AutoScreen. It’s more lightweight and faster than SnagIt, and was a bit cheaper, too.

Good article, though.

One application to rule them all. If you regularly take screenshots of Windows or the Desktop, edit them afterwards and upload them to a free image host you might find SHUP helpful. The software has all those functions build in which means you do not have to open two or three applications to do the same.

The typical process after configuring the settings in SHUP looks like the following. The user presses a hotkey which either takes a screenshot of the desktop or the active window. That screenshot is then displayed in a basic image editor where it is possible to resize the image, change the filename, tags, image format or use a rectangle to edit and upload only a selection of the image.

The image will then be automatically uploaded to the default file hoster and the url of that image automatically pasted into the clipboard. That’s a fast and easy way of creating and uploading screenshots.

Six file hosters are currently supported including Flickr, ImageShack and Photobucket. Some require usernames and passwords that have to be added in the configuration, the upload will obviously fail otherwise.

My suggestion would be to turn off all those confirmations to speed up the process a little bit. Shup adds itself to the right-click menu as well. Whenever you right-click an image you can access SHUP and use it to upload the file to an image hoster which is a very nice bonus.

I was not able to figure out how to upload images directly without having to open the image editor first. Think that is not possible.

Excellent program! I take screenshots frequently and SHUP is the best screenshot program I’ve used so far.

I used to use ScreenPrint 32 which was great but does not work with Vista.

SHUP is similar to Fireshot which is also excellent but only for website screenshots (it’s a Firefox Extension).

You can upload any file with Shup, using a couple of methods.

1) Drag and drop files onto the main Shup window

2) Right-click files in Windows and use the Shup menu

3) using the File -> Upload File menu item in the Shup main window

We also have a Firefox extension which I use quite often for taking screenshots of full web pages (makes for very tall images, sometimes)

Taking screenshots of web sites is probably one of the most commonly done tasks on the internet - doubly so if you have a blog or work as a journalist. This week, we wrote about Thumbalizr, a service that lets you take screenshots of websites. However, there are several other tools for easy screenshot capturing - some standalone and some in the form of a browser plugin.

Plugins

Save as image - an aptly named Firefox plugin that lets you save a page, frame, or part of either as an image directly from Firefox.

Pearl Crescent Page Saver - Save images of web pages in jpg or png format; save the entire page or just a portion of it, with the ability to automatically scale the image to a smaller size.

Picnik for Firefox - if you use online image editor Picnik this Firefox plugin enables you to easily import a screenshot of the currently opened webpage into it.

Snissa - simple Firefox plugin for taking web page screenshots.

Screengrab! - a plugin that lets you save visible part of window, the entire page, just a selection, or a particular frame of a webpage.

ieSnapshotter - a shareware plugin for Internet Explorer that allows you to take screenshots and thumbnails of web pages.

Standalone programs

SnagIt - definitely one of the best programs for screenshot capturing, with all the options you might need. Integrates with Firefox, can replace the standard Windows print screen function, and enables you to create profiles for various types of use. Costs 39.95 bucks, but you can try out a free trial version before buying.

FastStone Capture - a powerful utility for taking screenshots with a floating control panel as well as the ability to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, and even freehand-selected regions.

WebShot - a program that allows you to take screenshots and thumbnails of web pages or whole websites. Its main advantage is its powerful command line utility which enables you to automate the process of taking screenshots.

Paparazzi! - a tiny application for Mac OS X that lets you take screenshots of web pages.

PrintKey - replaces your print screen function with a better one with more features. There’s a commercial version but you can also find an older, unsupported, freeware version on the provided link.

I4X Screencatcher - take screenshots of the active window, entire screen, or the selected area with this tool.

InstantShot - an advanced but freeware application for Mac OS X that sits in your menu bar and gives you a myriad of screen capturing options, including capturing a region, hotkeys, several output formats, image scaling and many others.

Web based

WebShotsPro - enter a URL address and get a screenshot of the website in question. Simple. You might encounter quite a long queue before getting your screenshot, though.

Thumbalizr - already mentioned in a recent article, Thumbalizr lets you create screenshots of websites by pasting their URL; the only problem is that it doesn’t always work.

Are you tired of wondering if your finely crafted interface will look correct in Safarai or the latest Konqueror on Linux? If so, check out browsershots. Just enter the URL you want screenshots for and it gets added to the queue. Check back (the delay is around a 12 hours lately) and you're screenshots will be posted. Check out the results for ajaxian to get an idea of the shots you get back.

It looks like some of the current browsers include IE 6, Mozilla 1.7.8, Safari 2.0, and Firefox 1.0.4. The system works via a community of members who run an automated script that does the screenshots automatically with no user input necessary (see their about page for more). Very cool idea!
