Perhaps the only thing more frightening than a diagnosis of
cancer is a diagnosis of cancer that is not
correct.

Unfortunately many people receive false diagnoses of cancer and
either undergo further and unnecessary diagnostic tests, or
aggressive chemotherapy before the error is found. The emotional
and physical impact of such an error can be catastrophic
to a patient and his or her family.

Far more common, however, is the misdiagnosis of actual cancer.
The emotional and physiological impact on a patient who finds
out too late they have terminal cancer is equally
catastrophic.

Most types of cancer are curable if diagnosed early. In fact,
many can be diagnosed early because they produce signs and symptoms
that are easily recognizable to most well trained physicians.

If you or a loved one has suffered injury as a
result of a misdiagnosis of cancer or the failure to diagnose
cancer early, please submit the accompanying form. You may be
entitled to monetary awards for your injury!

jasmine flower hold the key to an effective new therapy to treat

                                        Prof. Eliezer Flescher of The
Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University thinks so. He and
his colleagues have developed an anti-cancer drug based on a decade
of research into the commercial applications of the compound
Jasmonate, a synthetic compound derived from the flower itself.
Prof. Flescher began to research the compound about a decade ago,
and with his recent development of the drug, his studies have now
begun to bear meaningful fruit.

                                        “Acetylsalicylic acid
(aspirin) is based on a plant stress hormone,” says Prof. Flescher.
“I asked myself, ‘Could there be other plant stress hormones that
have clinical efficacy?’ While various studies have suggested that
aspirin can prevent cancer, especially colon cancer, I realized
that there could be a chance to find a potent plant hormone that
could fight cancer even better. I pinpointed jasmonate.”

                                          A Natural
Leap to the Drugstore Shelf

                                        Both blood cancers and solid
tumors seem to be responsive to the jasmonate compound, known also
as methyl jasmonate. Prof. Flescher refers to it as the “jasmonate
scaffold,” a basis for developing a series of chemical derivatives.
In terms of bioavailability and safety, early first-in-man studies
have proven successful, and Prof. Flescher is hopeful that an
anti-cancer drug based on jasmonate could be on the shelf in
America within four years through the activity of Sepal-Pharma
which licensed his research from Ramot, the technology transfer arm
of Tel Aviv University.

                                        Normally drug development
takes much longer. “The jasmonate compound is used widely in
agriculture and in cosmetics,” says Prof. Flescher. “Proven to be
non-toxic, it has the same regulatory status as table salt. That
and the fact we are working on a natural chemical gives us a good
starting point for launching a new drug.”

                A
healthy, potent immune system is important in disease prevention.
We cannot survive without it, and its health is increasingly
important as we age. Observers dating back to the ancient Greek
physician Galen (A.D. 180), as well as the 19th century father of
pathology, Virchow, noted the relationship between inflammation
(presence of immune cells) and cancer. In other words, they saw
that cancer cells and the surrounding tissues appeared inflamed and
contained inflammatory cells. In the 20th Century scientists came
to understand that immune cells are present in a cancerous area to
do just what one would expect of them: kill cancer
cells.

Cancer and Inflammation

                Today, a new paradigm
emerges: Inflammatory cells can also promote cancer in some
tissues. Recent research demonstrates that immune cells can promote
cancer growth rather than hinder it, at least in some instances.
Inflammation associated with infection or other irritants is
estimated to account for at least 15% of all cancers.

                Don’t panic; this story is
not as confusing as it appears thus far. First, a brief review of
the immune system and its relevance to cancer growth.

                The
good Dr. Jekyll of the immune system protects our tissues from
invasion by pathogenic foreign substances, such as viruses and
bacteria, and also promotes wound healing. The immune system
contains essentially two arms, the innate and the adaptive immune
systems. The innate immune system is the first line of defense. It
consists of specialized cells whose duty is to patrol our tissues.
These cells have a superb ability to recognize an invader as
foreign. The foreigner contains clothing (specific molecules on its
surface) to alert the innate cell to their presence. Once this
foreigner-recognition process starts, the first innate cell
combatants release signal molecules (cytokines) to attract an army
of bacteria- and virus-eating cells (scavenger macrophages, natural
killer cells) to the invaded area. As battle rages, the cells of
the innate immune system send an SOS, through the secretion of
specialized signal molecules, to the second (adaptive) arm of the
immune system. Once notified of the invading pathogens, the
adaptive system activates its machinery to produce the big guns,
such as antibodies that bind to and neutralize the foreign
invaders. Working together, the two arms of the immune system
normally succeed in eliminating the pathogens.

                OK,
that’s the bright side of the immune system. How does Mr. Hyde fit
in?

                While ridding the body of
foreign invaders, the immune system requires new recruits to
replace its dead soldiers, and it needs to synthesize new tissue
damaged during battle. Numerous signal molecules are released by
the immune cells, some to bring in new blood vessels, some to
initiate new cellular growth, and still others to bring in the
wrecking crew (proteases) to remove the battle-damaged tissues.
Normally, swift action by the immune system eliminates the
pathogen, the damaged tissue is repaired, and the infected area is
essentially cured. However, persistent or chronic inflammation can
lead to a more deadly disease, cancer.

The incidence of prostate cancer is much lower in Asian than
Western populations. Given that environmental factors such as
dietary habits may play a major role in the causation of prostate
cancer and the high consumption of green tea in Asian populations,
this low incidence may be partly due to the effects of green tea.
The JPHC Study (Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study)
was established in 1990 for cohort I and in 1993 for cohort II. The
subjects were 49,920 men aged 40-69 years who completed a
questionnaire that included their green tea consumption habit at
baseline and were followed until the end of 2004. During this time,
404 men were newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, of whom 114 had
advanced cases, 271 were localized, and 19 were of an undetermined
stage. Green tea was not associated with localized prostate cancer.
However, consumption was associated with a dose-dependent decrease
in the risk of advanced prostate cancer. The multivariate relative
risk was 0.52 (95% confidence interval: 0.28, 0.96) for men
drinking 5 or more cups/day compared with less than 1 cup/day
(p(trend) = 0.01). Green tea may be associated with a decreased
risk of advanced prostate cancer. <!--End Snippet

Prostate cancer is very scary thing and if you are a male over
the age of 38 it should be on your radar. Prostate cancer is
the most common form of non skin cancer in North America, it
affects 1 in every 6 men. Age can be directly linked to the
likelihood of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Although only 1
in every 10,000 men under age of 40 will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer, this rate rapidly rises to 1 in every 38 men for the ages
of 40 to 59, and again 1 in every 15 for ages of 60 to 69. In
fact, greater than 65% of all prostate cancer is diagnosed in men
above the age of 65.
