Residents despair at
choice of Beltline route
To outsiders, it doesn't sound like much of a
dilemma: Should a Beltline trail planned at Tanyard Creek Park in
Buckhead be built on the west side or east side of the namesake
stream? [ Post your comments below. ] But the question is crucial
for some neighborhood residents and park advocates, who say the
eastern route would cut through too much of the park's central
meadow, a cherished swath of green space used for pick-up football
games and Frisbee tossing that's also the site of a bloody Civil
War battle.

Teen charged in shooting
of 11-year-old boy
Atlanta police charged a 15-year-old boy with
intentionally pulling out a gun and waving it in a threatening
manner at younger kids, shooting an 11-year-old in the abdomen,
It's unclear how the older teen got the gun, reported stolen a year
ago in Cherokee County. And police aren't sure whether the shooter
meant to fire the gun Sunday night, but they do believe he told the
younger kids not to leave the room, netting him charges of
kidnapping and cruelty to children, Atlanta police spokesman James
Polite said. The teen, whose name has not been released, also is
charged with aggravated assault and possession of a stolen
weapon.

Housing authority to
Atlanta: Don't interfere
The Atlanta Housing Authority told the City
Council on Monday to back off on its efforts to tell the agency
what it can do about demolishing a dozen older developments. A
nine-page letter by the powerful law firm, McKenna Long and
Aldridge, which the Housing Authority hired to review recent
council legislation about its plans, says that the council's
efforts violate state and federal guidelines. Some City Council
members on Tuesday are scheduled to discuss legislation requesting
that the Housing Authority not raze three complexes until it gives
tenants more information about the demolition. Another ordinance to
be considered Tuesday wants the Housing Authority to get the
council's support for any major plans before they are sent to
federal housing officials for approval.

Sorority dispute over
money turns into libel suit
A dispute among local members of the nation's
second-oldest black sorority over more than $100,000 that went
missing has members swapping accusations of secret meetings, a
cover-up, incompetent leadership, petty rivalries, libel and
defamation. The fight, which has played out over the past three
years, has persisted through several mediation attempts by the
Delta Sigma Theta's national leaders and court officials. On
Monday, it moved to Fulton County State Court where opening
arguments were heard in a lawsuit filed two years ago. Testimony
begins Wednesday before Judge Susan Forsling.

Drug dealer gets 30 years,
$1M fine
A Fulton County judge sent a strong anti-drug
message to a convicted cocaine trafficker Monday by punishing him
with a $1 million fine and a 30-year prison sentence. Superior
Court Judge Ural Glanville handed the tough sentence to defendant
Dwayne S. "Woo" Bryant, of Atlanta, who was convicted after a
week-long trial of trafficking cocaine and carrying a gun during
the commission of a felony. Bryant was arrested Sept. 27, 2005
during a drug deal that was actually arranged by Atlanta police's
Weed and Seed Unit, prosecutors said.

Atlanta School Board
weighs tax allocation districts
Glorypark. CityScape. Patriot Place. Ballpark
Village. The names are different but the concept is the same:
mixed-use development around sports venues. Cities across the
United States, from San Diego to Secaucus, are using stadiums and
arenas as anchors to reinvent rundown neighborhoods. Atlanta wants
to do the same near Turner Field, where neglected properties are an
all too frequent sight.

Agents say Tech student
accused of terrorist ties lied
Terrorism defendant Syed Haris Ahmed
repeatedly misled counterterrorism agents when they initially
interviewed him in March 2006, an FBI agent testified Monday. When
Ahmed, then a 21-year-old Georgia Tech mechanical engineering
student, was asked why he had visited Pakistan in the summer of
2005, Ahmed said it was to study the Koran. Instead, Ahmed would
tell agents days later, he went there to get military training,
"maybe at a terrorist training camp," FBI Special Agent Mark D.
Richards testified. Richards and fellow counterterrorism agent
Khalid Sediqi explained during a hearing Monday the context of
their interviews with Ahmed, a terrorist suspect living near the
Georgia Tech campus. Over three days of hearings this week, a U.S.
magistrate is listening to the secretly taped interviews agents had
with Ahmed to decide whether Ahmed's statements should be
suppressed.

Former cop to become
Fulton Superior Court judge
A police officer-turned-attorney known for
keeping his cool under pressure will soon join the Fulton County
Superior Court bench. Henry Newkirk, an Atlanta native, has spent
the past nine years as a Fulton County State Court judge,
specializing in asbestos civil litigation. Gov. Sonny Perdue
appointed him Friday to fill a vacancy left from the retirement of
Judge Stephanie Manis. Newkirk will run for election for a
four-year term in November.

"Cleaner" commutes to
downtown Atlanta mean free $15
For the next month, downtown Atlanta workers
can get a $15 gift card if they change from solo driving to a
cleaner commute for at least 23 round trips, according to a
downtown advocacy group. Such commutes include biking, walking,
carpooling, taking transit, van pooling and working from home. The
Downtown Transportation Management Association, part of Central
Atlanta Progress, is offering the reward for participating from
today through Feb. 15. Participants have to work downtown but can
live anywhere. For commuters who don't complete the winter program,
CAP and Clean Air Campaign have year-round drawings for clean
commuters, who can win $25 gift cards, said Sara Milton, the
group's project marketing manager.

Grady last refuge for
quadriplegic
For 248 consecutive days and nights, Ritta
Wadawu has lain in a hospital bed in the same room on the ninth
floor of Grady Memorial Hospital. [Post comments below.] She's
stared at the same cream-colored walls, the same mauve curtain and
the same small television she cannot operate herself. She's watched
a succession of roommates and a changing rotation of physicians
come and go.

It is amazing that luxury Atlanta real estate was limited to a few small areas and only a select number of Atlanta's finest real estate professionals practiced luxury home sales up until the past few years.
We did not know that Atlanta is full of rich and diverse neighborhoods and the metropolitan are encompasses about 15 counties, it is huge!
