Chester never fails to delight new and returning visitors. Chester is a wonderfully historic city with plenty of sight to see and things to do. If shopping is your thing, or you wish to spend the day taking in the history of times past and present, Chester is definitely the place for you.

The founding of Chester as a city is cited back to AD70 when the Romans landed and began to establish their fortress here. One of the main attractions to the Romans is the placement of Chester, or Deva as it was named initially, at the start of the River Dee . The remains of the original fortress walls can be searched out at the outskirts of the site of the Roodee-Chester Racecourse; which takes up the land of what was once the busy and highly important harbour of Chester.

Whilst the building of many of the historical monuments in the city of Chester was initiated during the Roman inhabitancy the wealth of architecture has evolved and grown in size throughout the decades. Examples of neoclassical, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian influences flood the surroundings making any visit quite awe-inspiring.

Chester is famous for its city walls which are a fantastic place to start your discovery of such an intricate city. The walls are the most complete circuit enclosing any British city and offer a stimulating and informative two mile walk around Chester; with the opportunity to see much that the city has to offer.

Similarly to the rest of Chester, the walls were first erected by the Romans to defend the ‘castra’ or Roman fort. Settlers to the city have made their own additions and deletions with the resulting walls having been added to as recently as the 1960s.

Once you have enjoyed your walk around the walls Chester provides plenty of excellent sources to help with further investigation into the intriguing history of its city. Many sites are awarded the accolade of being Heritage Sites and as such are carefully looked after and a delight to visit.

The Cheshire Military Museum has valuable information about past wars and Cheshire regiments and can be found in the fascinating grounds of the once glorious Chester Castle.

The Grosvenor Museum gives an insight into the life of the Victorians in Chester, as well as being home to regular modern exhibits.

Chester Cathedral   is sight not to be missed. Even those with no religious tendencies cannot fail to be impressed with the wonderful sculptures, architecture and stained glass art within the Cathedral.

There are a number of tours available during which experts will show you around their Chester making sure that you do not miss a thing.

You can choose to explore by foot, by open-top bus or even experience a cruise along the River Dee.

Following all this there is the Shopping in Chester. It is hard to avoid the sense of history surrounding you even if the aim of your visit is to go home laden with shopping bags. Chester offers a combination of high street names, individual and unique shops and the incredible Chester Market Hall. All this is located in a mixture of modern malls and the notoriously famous Chester Rows.
