Animals are known to have therapeutic value. One Maryland teen is learning first hand how horses can help her heal.  

Everything changed in an instant for 16 year old Krystal Greco. It was a typical day. She got up, took a shower, then felt a sharp pain in her back.

By the time she got to the hospital, Krystal couldn't walk. Turns out she had a ruptured disc in her spine.

She was paralyzed from the waist down. Krystal underwent intensive therapy at Kennedy Krieger.

She was determined to walk again and get back to her passion for riding horses.

And she did. Not only was she back in the saddle, she was competing in horse shows again.

Horseback riding mimics the natural movement of the limbs, and helps with flexibility, balance and muscle strength.

Krystal regained movement in her hips and knees and sensation has returned to her legs. She says, "Eventually, I do want to walk again and I can see that mentally as a realistic goal."

For now, Krystal can walk up to 300 feet with the help of leg braces and a walker.
