Do you ever wonder if people actually see your status updates? According to Facebook, only 12 percent of your friends see your average status update, but Facebook is testing an option called “Highlight” that lets you pay a few dollars to increase visibility of your posts.

Highlight lets the average user – not Pages or businesses – select an “important post” and “make sure friends see this.” Highlighted posts may appear higher in the news feed, stay visible longer, and appear to more friends and subscribers. A very small percentage of the user base now is seeing tests of a paid version of Highlight, but there’s also a free one designed to check if users are even interested in the option.

Highlight indicates Facebook’s willingness to try more aggressive ways of generating revenue, which should stimulate potential investors. But this also could backfire on Facebook. The service has always been free for users, and a pay-for-popularity feature may be a huge turnoff – especially to its younger and less financially equipped users who can’t afford such prominence.

Facebook also is playing with fire, in that it has made the average visibility rate public itself. The perception by users may be that Facebook has designed its news feed algorithms to create a need for its own new Highlight product. On Facebook, what’s supposed to matter is how stimulating your posts are, not how deep your pockets are.

The official statement from Facebook on this: “We’re constantly testing new features across the site. This particular test is simply to gauge people’s interest in this method of sharing with their friends.”

Facebook probably will not see positive reactions to Highlight, but if it does, it could actually turn into an unprecedented stream of revenue. The company’s new test may have less to do with users and more to do with investors: Just the fact that Facebook would test this could bolster confidence in potential IPO investors. They would be more likely to invest if they know Facebook is interested in amping up its advertising, so as to strike a balance between a pure user experience and the goals of advertisers.

That’s especially important now, because this week Facebook had to warn its investors that its ad business is in jeopardy, because more users access via mobile, where not nearly as many ads are available.

There’s a potential problem for Highlighted updates to clutter the news feed with undesirable information, reducing content relevance. Facebook’s news-feed-sorting algorithm is designed to show you posts by your closest friends or ones that have received a lot of Likes or Comments. Highlight will distort this, and will encourage news-feed-spamming small businesses, club promoters, pyramid schemers, aspiring rock stars, or anyone else who has something to gain from a few clicks.

Yahoo has gone ahead and sued Facebook over patents.

We reported this was happening last week, after we learned that talks between the two companies broke down.

Here's the official statement from Yahoo on the suit, via All Things D:

"Yahoo! has invested substantial resources in research and development through the years, which has resulted in numerous patented inventions of technology that other companies have licensed. These technologies are the foundation of our business that engages over 700 million monthly unique visitors and represent the spirit of innovation upon which Yahoo! is built. Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court. We are confident that we will prevail."

Previously we heard Yahoo wanted to take a percentage of Facebook's revenues going forward.

This better work for Yahoo. The company is destroying what's left of its reputation by trying shakedown Facebook.

Facebook's statement on the matter, via CNBC: "We're disappointed that Yahoo's effort to engage with us was limited to a few short phone calls ... We will defend ourselves vigorously against these puzzling actions."

Facebook profiles are a better predictor of a person's job performance than an IQ test, according to research published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

Six people with experience in human resources rated the Facebook pages of 518 college students in terms of the "Big Five" personality traits of modern psychology: neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness.

"The results reveal… that evaluators can reach independent agreement as to personality-related phenomena posted on Facebook. The results also show that the evaluators exhibited an acceptable degree of internal consistency reliability. Together, these results suggest that evaluators trained to assess participant profiles can provide reasonably reliable estimates of Big Five personality traits from [social networking websites]."

The ratings of evaluators correlated strongly with participants' self-rated personality traits as well as with job performance, hirability and academic performance.

Researchers stated that the study corroborates earlier evidence that people externalize personality tendencies to their environments partly through the expressive mechanisms of identity claims and behavioral residue.

Although the practice is common among employers, there are obvious legal and ethical concerns. Interviewers usually avoid questions regarding race, religion, sexual preference or marital status because of potential legal issues, but such information may be clearly posted on someone's profile. Collecting this non-job-relevant information could result in biased hiring decisions.

Nevertheless, the researchers concluded that analyzing social networking profiles is useful for screening applicants as it is less time-consuming– the average assessment took 5 to 10 minutes and did not require a respondent's presence– and more cost-effective than traditional methods.

And best of all for potential employers, the practice is particularly accurate:

"Observer ratings of personality traits via [social networking websites] are roughly as accurate as ratings made by individuals who have detailed knowledge of the ratee, such as their significant others and close friends."
