10 taste-tested Irish breakfasts in Chicago
You know what never changes about a huge, traditional Irish breakfast? The lethargy that follows you for the rest of the day. You know what else never changes? Everything else. Your bread may be soda (sweeter) or brown (coarser), house-made or not; the beans may be Heinz or Bachelors. But the rashers (bacon), sausages and puddings (another kind of sausage) — the heart of Irish breakfast — will not differ much. A few suppliers serve many of the Irish pubs and restaurants in Chicago. So, what follows are not the 10 finest Irish breakfasts in the area, but 10 worthwhile breakfasts that provide, to varying shades of emerald, a suggestion of Irishness, however cliched (rated on a one-to-four-shamrocks scale). Unless noted, the plate is served all day, every day, year round.

How Irish? As Irish as a slick, sprawling 2-year-old North Shore pub gets; this place is so new-looking that the list of cab phone numbers in the men's room doesn't even have a stain on it yet. Three of four owners are from Ireland. Our plate didn't have the promised coarse slice of brown bread with Kerrygold butter — "the only Irish butter," says co-owner Nuala Kavanagh — but the puddings were richer than most we tried, and with a crisper coat too. Bonus points for adding lightly fried mushrooms, and those eggs — our waitress asked twice "how specifically fried" we actually wanted them. Cheers! Rating: 3 shamrocks |
Speaking from Northern Ireland, we have an
Ulster Fry (our variation of the England/Irish fry up) and you
can't have an Ulster or Irish brekkie without Potato bread and
Soda! We also added the Hash brown in Belfast - we stole the idea
of you folks about 6 or 7 yrs ago and now it's found in fry's all
around Belfast - so thx America!
But yeh, you should google up some potato bread recipes and add em
in! Very easy to make and very tasty! You won't regret it!!
=D
Also, I've had this brekkie in Dublin plenty of times while I'm
passing through, plenty of people seem to appreciate it - it's the
ONLY hangover cure! - where are you eating?! lol You're missing
out!!

This is not an Irish breakfast, it's English. In Dublin at least you will not find common people eating this kind of meal. They're much more the tea and a pastry for everyday.
